Blackcats fall to 4-3 in district with loss to Fairfield
The Blackcats (7-9, 4-3 in District 20-3A) fell 10-0 at Fairfield on April 1, getting no hit. Romario Navarro, Rylan Greer and Gabe Solis each walked, and Solis stole a base.
As the second half of district is underway, Mexia is tied with Groesbeck for fourth place in the league. They entered this week a half game behind third-place Elkhart and a game behind runner-up Teague.
The top four finishers in the district advance to the postseason. Concerning tiebreakers, the Black Cats are 0-1 against Elkhart, whom they were visiting at press time, and 0-1 against Teague.
The Blackcats have home games against Groesbeck and Westwood on April 11 and 17, sandwiched around a trip to Teague on April 15, all starting at 7 p.m. They won their first meetings against Groesbeck and Westwood in district.
Mexia Softball
The Ladycats (1-12, 0-7 in District 20-3A) fell 15-0 at Fairfield on April 1 as Nyeli Garay and Fallon Jackson each had a hit and Jaydee Bell walked.
Mexia was at Elkhart at press time, followed by a home game against Groesbeck on April 11 and a visit to Teague on April 15. The final game of the season is April 17 at home against Palestine Westwood. All games start at 7 p.m.
MEXIA GOLF
The Black Cats competed in the District 20-3A Golf Tournament at Tri-County Golf Club in Teague on March 24 and 31. They posted an opening round score of 425, but only three golfers were able to finish the second round.
Boyd Sterling led the Black Cats with a two-day score of 193. He opened with a 99 and improved to a 94 on the second day.
Also for Mexia, Noah Reyes shot 213 (108-105), Brody Sterling had a 238 (110-128) and Jesus Jimenez shot 108 in the first round, but did not finish the tournament.
Mexia Soccer
A dozen members of the Black Cats and Ladycats soccer teams were named to their respective All-District 23-4A Teams by the league’s coaches.
Black Cats named to the first team are junior goalkeeper Max Toscano and junior center back/defensive midfielder/wing/striker Jason Avila. Second team picks are junior striker Mario Lambarri and sophomore center midfielder Juan Canales. Freshman right wing Izaak Salazar, freshman defensive midfielder/left back Eli Salazar and sophomore left wing Junior Gonzalez are honorable mentions.
For the Ladycats, senior center back Daizy Salazar is a first-team selection, with junior center midfielder Mallory Flores named to the second team. Honorable mentions are freshman goalkeeper Zoe Silva, sophomore right back Mary Jane Sifuentes and sophomore center midfielder/wing Vanessa Peña.
Silva set the Ladycats single season saves record with 130.
Coolidge Track
The Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets each won the District 24-1A Track and Field Meet at Oakwood on April 3. They qualified 15 athletes (9 girls, 6 boys) for the Area 23/24-1A Meet, which they were hosting at press time and from which the top four in each event will move on to the Class 1A Region III Meet April 18-19 at Waco Midway High School.
The teams combined to win 17 gold medals (9 girls, 8 boys), 8 silver (5 girls, 3 boys) and four bronze (2 boys, 2 girls).
Devonta Johnson and Jacoby Brown of the Jackets, along with Lakendra Hatton of the Lady Jackets each qualified in five events. Johnson won three gold medals and Jacoby Brown two.
Qualifying in four events were Jabraylon Brown and Sahira Perez with a gold medal each. Kedrick Adkinson, Holly Allcorn, Julianna Samaniego and Genesis are each three-event qualifiers with one gold medal Tino Bailon also won a gold medal for the boys, with Zaynie also capturing gold for the girls.

Wortham Golf
Junior Addison Erler of the Wortham Lady Bulldogs made a second-day charge and qualifi ed for regional competition as an individual medalist from the District 18-2A Girls Golf Tournament atAthens Country Club on March 24 and 31. She had a two-round total of 239, improving from her opening round of 122 to a 117.
The 2A Region III Tournament is April 14-15 at Cherokee Ranch Golf Club in Jacksonville.
The Wortham boys were led by Brecker Russell, who posted a 194 over two rounds. He improved from 104 to 88 on the second day.
Wortham Track
The Bulldogs (4) and Lady Bulldogs (5) combined to qualify nine athletes to area competition from the District 18-2A Meet in Italy onApril 2.
Ziah Betts of the Lady Bulldogs won the lone gold medal for Wortham, taking first in the 300-meter hurdles. She advanced in four events in all, including the high jump and on the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
For the Bulldogs, Kymani Johnson qualified in three events. Along with the 200-meter dash, he ran a leg of the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
The top four finishers in each event qualified for the Area 17/18-2A Meet in Riesel, which was being held at press time. From there, the top four in each event move on to the Class 2A Region III Meet in Palestine April 18-19.
Kaedon Busby won the boys junior varsity triple jump for the Bulldogs, leaping 36 feet.

Worthman Baseball
The Bulldogs (1-14, 0-5 in District 20-2A) struggled to a 10-0 loss at Kerens on March 31 despite a pair of hits by Shane Guthrie. Trynen Cawthorn also had a hit.
The Bulldogs host LaPoynor on April 11, before staying at home to host Cayuga on April 15, all at 4:30 p.m.
Wortham Softball
The Lady Bulldogs (69, 1-7 in District 20-2A) fell short in an 8-6 loss at Kerens on March 31.
Katelynn Spain and Megan Cryer led Worth with three hits each. Cryer also walked and drove in a pair of runs, while Spain also had an RBI. Gracie Winstead had a hit and two RBI, Haylee Shivers had a hit and RBI, Johanna Contreras had a hit and Dallas Hoag walked twice.
Wortham hosts LaPoynor in the second game of a home-and-home series on April 11 at 4:30 p.m. April 15 against Cayuga at 4:30 p.m. is the final home game and they end the season at Cayuga on April 18 at 6 p.m.
Coolidge Softball
The Lady Jackets (0-4) fell 28-10 at Avalon on April 1 in a game with a score that more closely resembled football or basketball.
Haylie Brooks had a grand slam to lead the Coolidge hitting, driving in four runs. She also drew a walk and stole two bases.
Litzy Perez and Kaydence Bostic each had a hit with a walk, RBI and stolen base.
Also for the Lady Jackets, Zaynie Owens, hit; Madi Haney hit, walk, stolen base; Sahira Perez hit, walk, stolen base; Janessa Ramirez walk, RBI; Lakendra Hatton walk; Laura Martinez, hit by pitch.
