VELMA LEE JEAN HAMMETT

Velma Lee Jean Hammett passed away on April 25, 2022, in Mexia, at the age of 79. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, April 30, in the Wortham Cemetery.

Jean was born on Dec. 20, 1942, in San Francisco, to Colter and Mary Ellen (Galvin) Thornton. She was a loving mother of three children, Cynthia, Anthony and Bobby Ray. Jean devoted her life to taking care of her husband and raising their children.

Jean was a devout Christian who loved God, family and the simple things in life. She loved spending time outdoors where she could see, and enjoy, all of God’s creations. Jean loved the birds, walking in Fort Parker, fishing and all animals. She didn’t want any stray animals to go hungry so, naturally, she fed them. She donated to many worthy causes. Although she had a big, loving heart, she was also known, at times, to be a “spitfire.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Colter and Mary Thornton; and husband, Robert Penn Hammett.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Polvado; sons, Anthony Hammett and Bobby Ray Hammett; grandchildren, Jeremy, Christian and Westley; great-grandchildren, Raiden, Bryce and Kendall; sisters, Barbara Snowden and husband Freddy, and Raide Thornton; a number of nieces and nephews; and many friends.
