Nellie Mae Horton

Nellie Mae Horton passed away April 1, 2019, in Mexia at the age of 79.  Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 6, at Blair-Stubbs Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Wilson Chapel Cemetery.  James Howard, Keith Howard, Andy Howard, Kyle Westbrook, Abel Martinez Jr. and Rocky Whitely will serve as pallbearers.

Nellie was born Nov. 23, 1939, in Jewett to Freddie Jasper and Elizabeth Ellen Taylor Howard.  She worked in Healthcare as a caregiver for many years, prior to retirement.   

Nellie devoted her life, not only to the Lord and her family, but to many others; caring and giving just came easy and natural to her.  She loved and cherished her family.  She was a proud mother of six children, eight grandchildren and Elizabeth Howard; husbands, Robert Franklin McGary Jr. and James Horton; granddaughter, Nicole Lee Harris; brothers, Eugene and Hugh Howard; sisters, Judith Guest, Melvia Cazy, Cathy Winston and Lillie Pearl Currie.

Nellie is survived by her children, Mona Kay Simecek and husband Steve of Cameron, Diane Wells of Illinois, Robert Lynn McGary of Florida, Darrell Lee McGary of Rockdale, Mark Alan McGary of Bryan and Anna Marie McGuire and husband James of Broaddus; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Sidney Howard and wife Lillie Pearl of New Baden and Charles Howard of Jewett; and numerous nieces and nephews.

12 great-grandchildren. Nellie was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking in addition to sewing, quilting, gardening and working in her yard. She had an outgoing personality, loved joking with people and having a good time. She was strong in her faith and a longtime member of the Church of Christ in Franklin.
