Meredith Howard

Meredith Howard passed away Feb. 23, 2021, at the age of 80.

Meredith was born March 15, 1940, in Vickery, a little town outside of Dallas. Her father, Eudell Raymond Green, was in graphic reproductions, and her mother, Mary Frances (Steward) Green, helped her husband in their business reproducing ads and artists’ renditions.

Growing up in Garland with her sister Clara June, Meredith liked to be wild and free. She completed the 12th grade at Garland High School. Meredith was the proud mother of Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Debeneadto Carroll. Kathy was Meredith’s life. Her life revolved around her family, and she dearly loved her grandson Cameron and great-grandson Bryce. She worked as a receptionist at the hospital in Wortham and at the CEFCO of Wortham. Outside of her family, being part of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary was Meredith’s life. She joined the Ladies Auxiliary in November 1975 and was a continuous member. A Life Member of VFW Auxiliary 3892 in Harker Heights, Meredith’s daughter Kathy was also a member for over 27 years, and her grandson Cameron was the first male member of the Auxiliary. Meredith served as president of District 14 and of the State Auxiliary from 2002 to 2003. She also served as Auxiliary Treasurer for Auxiliary 3892 for over 12 years and District 14 treasurer for over 25 years. She was very proud of her service to the organization. Meredith was outspoken with a feisty spirit. She enjoyed going to the VFW conventions. On the way home, they would stop at the various theme parks in each state. She enjoyed snacking on chips and dip and cheese.

Meredith leaves behind her daughter Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Carroll, her grandson Cameron Allen Bowden, her great-grandson Bryce Allen Bowden, her sister and brother-in-law June and Phillip Cummins, of Fort Worth, her nephew Daniel Ray Cummins of Garland, her nephew Michael Scott Cummins of Fort Worth, and other great-nephews and nieces.

To honor her life, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Harker Heights VFW Post #3892, 201 VFW Drive, Harker Heights, at 11 a.m., Saturday March 13.
