Leona Kathleen ‘Kat’ Rogers

Leona Kathleen “Kat” Rogers slipped peacefully into her eternal sleep on Monday, Sept. 18, 2023, at her home in Mexia, at the age of 58, after a lengthy struggle with cancer.

She was born Aug. 5, 1965, in the small town of Athens, to Martha E. Jumper Andrews and Hilda Carnell “H.C.” Rogers. Sadly, Martha died when Kat was only 7 months old.

Kat loved anything that had to do with the outdoors, fishing, camping and hiking. She loved traveling to new places, just to see something she had never seen before.

Kat was an accomplished carpenter and auto mechanic and always had a helping hand for anyone needing something built, remodeled or repaired. Kat never lost her small-town helpfulness. She made friends everywhere she went. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

In October 2016, in Pueblo County, Colorado, Kat married her long-time love, Stacey Nowlin. It was one of the first legal, samesex marriages in Colorado. She and Stacey faced the normal struggles that all newlyweds go through and then faced hatred and bigotry as well, but they never let it destroy their love for each other.

Kat is survived by her life partner of more than 15 years, Stacey Gayle Rogers, and stepson Cory Ogg. Also surviving her are half-sisters Virginia “Beth” Andrews Kading and Judy Andrews and numerous nieces, nephews, and scores of friends.

Kat was preceded in death by her parents, H.C. and Martha Jumper Rogers; sister, Teresa Rogers Bufkin; half-brother, Boxie Lee Andrews; and half-sisters, Eunice Andrews Stinson and Margaret Andrews.

Memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sept 24, at 2 p.m. at Hughes City Park in Mexia. Service and arrangements entrusted to Pearly Gates Funeral.
