Franklin D. Sloan

Franklin D. Sloan was born on May 23, 1940, in Caygua, in Anderson County, to Ella Woods and Booker T.Sloan. He was one of 12 children.

He moved to Palestine and attended Banks School and Lincoln High School.

Franklin enlisted in the U.S.Army Reserves at 17 years of age and served from 1960 to 1962.

His proudest family moments were with his father, Booker T.Washington, telling him old wise stories on the front porch.

His proudest accomplishment was working 22 years at Texas Westmoreland Coal Company, truck driving and mechanic schools in Indianapolis, Ind.

Franklin married Yvonne Jackson on May 9, 2000.

Some of his civic accomplishments included being Deacon at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and First Baptist North, Teague, and being a Soldier in the Army of the Lord at Emmanuel Fellowship Baptist Church, in Dallas. Franklin was called home Dec. 13, 2020, in Dallas, with his devoted family by his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

Franklin was better known as Papa Frank and Big Smokey.

Loving survivors include his devoted wife, Yvonne Sloan; his children, Sonya and Shanita Burks, and Tanika Yelverton and Derek McGee; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; special nephew Bruce (Tammy) Johnson; special cousins Linda and Dwight Gamble; and a host of other relatives and friends. Golden Gates Funeral Home in Dallas, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
