CALVIN POPP

Calvin Popp, of Mexia, passed away on June 22, 2021, in Groesbeck, at the age of 65. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 26, in the Mexia Cemetery, with Jacob Bishop officiating.

Visitation with the family will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. There will be a table set for those who wish to share a memory at the visitation, or one may be left on the website.

Calvin was born July 9, 1955, in Mexia to John Joe Popp and Bonnie Jean (Douglas) Roberts. He grew up in Mexia, attended Mexia public school and later, moved to El Campo, where he graduated high school. He was a longtime, well-known self-employed welder/contractor.

Calvin was a proud, loving father of two daughters, Tara and Mandy, but there was no love greater than his love for grandson, Raylan. In Paw-Paw’s eyes, Raylan could do no wrong, and whatever he wanted, he usually got. Calvin truly enjoyed spoiling him more than anything else. Raylan was his pride and joy.

Calvin, almost always, began his day with a glass of tea, along with his coffee drinking friends, at the Drillin’ Rig. He occasionally enjoyed playing solitaire and working crossword puzzles.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Popp; mother, Bonnie Roberts; and two brothers, John Gene and Kenneth Wayne Popp.

Calvin is survived by his daughters, Tara Popp of Mexia, and Mandy Jo Popp of College Station; grandson Raylan Marshall Hickman; sisters Margie Alexander, Nancy Ridge and Cindy White; and brother Glenn Roberts and wife Jennifer.
