Billy Joe Whitener

Billy Joe Whitener, 75, of Mexia, passed away June 22, 2019, at Ennis Regional Medical Center in Ennis. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at Temple Baptist Church in Mexia with the Rev. Michael Vestal, Brother Joey Whitener and Joe Pillow officiating. Burial was to be in Woodland Cemetery in Kirvin. Visitation was 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Temple Baptist Church.

Billy Joe was born April 22, 1944, in Purdon to Oscar E. and Lillie L. Whitener. He taught Bible college at White Plains Baptist Church in North Carolina and was in nursing-home ministry in Houston and Mexia for 30 years. He worked for several years as a salesman in auto parts. He had a heart for missions and was a prayer warrior. His biggest desire was to see his family and friends saved. He loved his kids and grandkids and will be truly missed.

Billy Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar E. And Lillie L. Whitener; brother, Odom Ray Whitener; and sisters, Vauda Lou (Bonnie) Hearne and Nancy Aline Witt.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Whitener of Mexia; daughter, Carolyn Williams of North Carolina; son, Joey Whitener and wife Kristie of Louisiana; grandchildren, Charity Lowe and husband Cole, Clayton Williams and wife Cayla, Colton Whitener, Jacob Whitener, Miranda Whitener and Bethany Whitener; great-grandchildren, Gabriel Snead, Camie Snead, Vivian Lowe and Josalyn Lowe; brother, Ernest Whitener; brothers-in-law, Bill Hearne and Ray Smith and wife Peggy; nephew, Jason E. Whitener and wife Katie; nieces, Sara Witt, Stephany Witt, Sheila Brown and Suzie Renfro.

Serving as pallbearers weree Colton Whitener, Jamie Smith, Ray Smith Jr. Buddy Smith, Brett Bell and Willis William. Honorary pallbearers were Ben Garner, Jacob Whitener and Randy Smith.
