The show must go on ... after 2 year hiatus
The Rotary Club of Mexia will hold its 66th annual Talent Show at 7 p.m. Friday, March 18, at the Mexia High School auditorium.
All proceeds from the show help Rotarians support local scholarships and programs, as well as worldwide projects, Dr. Nathan Gonzalez, Rotary Club of Mexia president, said.
Auditions have already been scheduled, and a group of almost 20 students were chosen to compete in either the junior or senior divisions. Tickets are sold at the door – $5 for adults and $3 for children.
“The last Talent Show was held in 2019, so it’s been a while since we’ve come together,” Gonzalez said. “[I] feel a huge relief and am really excited.”
Children from Aunt Rosie’s Daycare will open the show with songs, and Mexia resident Revendy Rhodes will be master of ceremonies for the night.
Attendees are in for an interesting mix of talent this year, Gonzalez said.
The junior division includes Kindergarten through fifth-graders, and the senior division includes sixth-graders through seniors. Both divisions will be awarded first through fifth place prizes in the amounts of $250, $200, $150, $100 and $50. An additional $250 will be awarded to the act judged best overall.
Acts are judged on talent, originality and entertainment, he said.
There are more than 60 sponsors for the Talent Show. Past projects made possible through fundraisers like the Talent Show, include building the MHS tennis courts and restrooms, playground equipment, two to three academic or vocational scholarships a year and new bridges at Hughes City Park.
The Rotary Club is an international organization focusing on community involvement and outreach. There are currently about 25 Rotary Club of Mexia members. Traditionally, the membership is made up of business leaders and community activists, but it’s open to everyone.
“[The Talent Show] is a friendly activity. It really helps with the involvement, encourages student developmental talents,” Gonzalez said.
