JOSEPH MARION CONNELL

Funeral services for Joseph Marion Connell, 100, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at the pavilion at Antioch Cemetery in the Luna Community south of Teague. Brother Darrel Beggs will officiate.

Visitation will be held with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague.

Mr. Connell passed away on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021, in Mexia at the Mexia LTC.

He was born in Teague on March 28, 1921, and was a lifelong resident of Freestone County. Mr. Connell graduated from Teague High School with the class of 1941, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II from August 1942 until his discharge in February 1946. He married Wilma Chestine on June 16, 1949, in Mexia, and shared more than 68 years of marriage together until being separated by her death on Feb. 11, 2018. Mr. Connell worked for the railroad in Teague for 43 years before retiring. He enjoyed raising cattle on his ranch in Luna. Mr. Connell was a member of First Baptist Church in Teague.

He is survived by one son, Joe Keith Connell and wife Ann of Huntsville; two grandsons, Ben Marshall and wife Melissa of Plano and Andy Marshall; two great-grandchildren, Kelsey Bloch and Beck Marshall; one brother, Durwood Rogers of Oklahoma; one sister-in-law, Louise Collins of Waco; one nephew, Mike Collins and wife Kathy; one niece, Kristi Carrasquillo; one great-niece, Karina Carrasquillo; two nephews, Zack Collins and Reed Collins; cousins, Mary Lee and husband Don, Kerry Webb and wife Glenda, Clydell Webb and wife Carole Ann, Danny Webb and wife Nelma, Elwood Knight and wife Sandy, as well as numerous other cousins and friends of the family.

Mr. Connell was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Chestine Connell; one brother, Mike Connell; and one sister, Stella Connell.

The family requests memorials be made to the BRI Railroad Museum, P.O. Box 604, Teague, TX 75860.
