October

For the month of October, LARAS House animal shelter will offer reduced fee and free adoptions for select older pets during their Oldie, But a Goodie Event. Those who can’t adopt but want to participate may donate the fees for someone who can’t afford to get a pet: $50 for a dog or $25 for a cat. For more information, go to larashouseshelter.org/oldie.

Thursday, Oct. 25

11 a.m. – Chris Salcedo, WBAP radio host and director of the Conservative Hispanic Society, is headlining the Massey Foundation of Texas’ Tacos with a Side of Salcedo at the Kosse Community Center in Kosse. The main topic of the Skype event is the mid-term elections and any pertinent current event of the day. Everyone is invited to participate, question and learn through this event. A taco lunch will be served. Space is limited so reserve your tickets by Oct. 22 via email to jean@masseyfoundationtx.com.

Saturday, Oct. 27

8:30 a.m.-noon – Mexia High School’s HEROs group will hold Halloween events in downtown Mexia, including a zombie run, pet costume contest and taco soup lunch.

9 a.m.-2 p.m. – First United Methodist Church, 203 N. Canton St., will have its Fall Festival. A barbecue lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and kids get a free hot dog lunch. Activities will include arts and crafts, bake sale, kids’ activities, garage sale, silent auction, frozen casseroles, and entertainment by the First Methodist Preschool.

10 a.m. – Point Enterprise Community Association will meet at the Club House on LCR 502 for its annual business meeting. All members are encouraged to attend. There will be a soup supper at 5:30 p.m. For a $5 donation you get soup, corn bread and dessert. Come and get to know your neighbors.

1-4 p.m. – Spooktacular Fall Festival at the Confederate Reunion Grounds for all ages, with a pumpkin-carving contest (bring your own pumpkin) at 2 p.m., followed by a costume contest at 3 p.m. There will also be face painting, Halloween crafts, spooky storytelling, a picture booth and candy. The cost is $5 per family.

Sunday, Oct. 28

2:30 p.m. – Thanksgiving in October at Life Ministries Full Gospel Church, Pastor Gregory Horn, 4706 N. Hwy. 14 in Mexia. Message at 2 p.m. by Pastor Thomas Dansby of God’s House of Deliverance; dinner serving starts at 4 p.m. All are invited.

2:30 p.m. – Ford Chapel Baptist Church, 800 W. Palestine St., Mexia, is hosting their annual Homecoming/ Anniversary Program. Guest speaker will be Pastor Curtis Jefferson Jr. of New Hope Baptist Church, Weatherford. All are welcome to join them in the celebration.

3 p.m. – Sardis P.B. Church will have its 148th annual Homecoming. Guest Speaker will be the Rev. Timothy Williams of Bethsaida M.B. Church of Mexia. All choirs, Sardis alumni and praise-dancers are welcome.

6 p.m. – Calvary Baptist Church presents Kenneth Stevenson, an expert on the Shroud of Turin. Stevenson was on the first team to go and study the Shroud in 1978.

Monday, Oct. 29

10 a.m.-2 p.m. – Free stroke screening at Parkview Rural Health Clinic, 514 S. Bonham St., Mexia. Ten minutes could change your life or the life of someone you love.

6 p.m. –  The Lake Mexia Citizens Association will hold its last quarterly meeting of 2018 at the Recreation Building at the Lake Mexia Marina. Everyone on or around Lake Mexia is welcome; the public is invited. An Oncor representative will speak on improvements being made to power lines in the area. The Association will provide grilled burgers, hot dogs, and condiments. Members are asked to bring desserts, chips, dips, baked beans, coleslaw, etc. to fill out the menu.

Thursday, Nov. 1

1 p.m. – The Sterling C. Robertson Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas will meet at Community Bank at 1711 Lake Success Drive, Waco. Speakers Susan Merritt and Kathy Sartor will present “Gonzales Explored” absit the “Come and Take It” skirmish that began the fight for Texas Independence. Sunday, Nov. 4

3 p.m. – Tabernacle of Faith Primitive Baptist Church invites the public to its Annual Men’s Day. Elder J.A. Williams, pastor of St. James PBC will speak on “Fitted and Fixed with Purpose,” based on Acts 11:23-24. Tabernacle of Faith is located at 600 E. Sumpter St.

2:30 p.m. – Sandy Grove Primitive Baptist Church is having its 71st Homecoming Service. The message will be delivered by Pastor Alvin Taylor of Mount Vernon Baptist Church of Waco. A dinner will follow in the fellowship hall.

6:30 p.m. – The NAACP monthly meting will be held at the Senior Citizen Center, 111 N. Sherman St., Mexia.

Sunday, Nov. 11

3 p.m. – Rocky Branch Primitive Baptist Church invites the public to join them for praise, praise-dancing and a word from the Lord through Elder William J. Whitley, pastor of Pilgrim Rest PBC of Austin. The church is located 2 miles west on County Road 970, off FM 1366.

Shoebox Christmas gifts for Operation Christmas Child may be dropped off at Calvary Baptist Church, 519 S. McKinney in Mexia: Monday, Nov. 12 through Thursday, Nov. 15 - 1-5 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, Nov. 16-17, 9 a.m. - noon; Sunday, Nov. 18 - 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.; and Monday, Nov. 19 - 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. The truck with all the packages will be leaving at 10 a.m. sharp the final Monday, so be early if dropping packages that day.

Thursday, Nov. 15

6 p.m. – All interested parties are invited to a sneak peek open house at Cross Creek Meadows equine therapy center at its new location: 629 LCR 741 in Thornton. Hamburgers, hot dogs and all the fixings will be offered, also s’mores, horse shoes and lots of information about the center, which uses horses as therapy for children, veterans and others. Take 937 to the Oletha Baptist Church; turn left at the church (LCR 741) and drive a little over one mile. To the left, you’ll see the signs and balloons. Drive through the cattle guard and up the rock road to the big red barn.

7 p.m. – Limestone County Conservatives will hold their monthly meeting at Austin’s Steakhouse in Kosse to discuss many items of interest that affect the citizens of Limestone County. Everyone is welcome the third Monday of the month.
