Blackcats lose to Malakoff, must wait on playoff scenarios

The Mexia football team could have clinched a playoff berth with a victory at Malakoff on Thursday night. However, the Blackcats fell to the No. 5 team in the state, 55-13. Mexia has a bye next week on the final night of the regular-season. No longer controlling their destiny, whether or not they get into the postseason will be determined by how games play out on the final night of the regular season.

Fairfield ends Ladycats’ season with three-set sweep

Mexia got the jump on stateranked Fairfield in all three sets of their volleyball match at the Mexia High School gym on Tuesday, Oct. 25. But Fairfield roared back in all three sets to sweep the Ladycats in their final match of the season. Set scores were 25-16, 25-10 and 25-23. Mexia finished with a 2-12 record in District 20-3A. Fairfield won the district championship with a 13-1 slate. Mexia scored the first two points of the opening set on a kill by Kei’Niya Thornton and a net violation by Fairfield. Fairfield rebounded to take the lead, but Mexia stayed close throughout much of the set. Arianna Richardson handcuffed Fairfield with a serve that was not returned over the net and the Ladycats were within 14-13.
