Lula was born on April 30, 1923, in Dallas.  Lula married the love of her life, O.Y. “Bill” Goswick Jr., whom she adoringly referred to as “my Goswick,” on June 28, 1942.

Lula inspired many with her positive, vibrant personality and unwavering faith in God. She was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church of Mexia, where she served in many ministry efforts, on countless committees, and taught Sunday school.

Lula was a happy soul; she enjoyed playing and hosting bridge, gardening, sewing, and participating in various community organizations and volunteer activities.

Lula was a dedicated wife and mother first and foremost. She treasured her family greatly and embraced every moment with them. Lula especially loved her role as “LuLu” to her grandand great-grandchildren.

Lula was preceded in death by her parents, father Walter P. Mathews and mother Eva Steger Mathews; husband Bill Goswick; brothers Louie Mathews, Preston Mathews and Allen Mathews; and sisters Mellie Merle Scott and Eva Lynn Reid. Lula is survived by son Richard “Dick” Goswick and wife Anita, of Mexia; daughter LuAnn Whitley and husband Ron, of Kennedale, and daughter Debbie Goswick, of Houston; beloved “Lulu” to grandchildren Kimberly Meyer and husband Patrick, of Groesbeck, Richard Y. To Skilled Care of Mexia’s leadership and staff, thank you for making Lula feel so welcome and comfortable in her final months.

To the dedicated staff of Providence Hospice Mexia, your comporting compassion, invaluable care and immeasurable support to our Lula was a true blessing and we are beyond grateful for each and every one of you.

Burial was in Mexia Cemetery.  Ronnie Guthrie, Ronnie Whitley, Trevor Morrow, Doug Allen, Ashton Whitley, Jason Whitley and Matt Reid served as pallbearers.  Honorary pallbearers were Randy Reid, Terry Don Shivers, Eric Harwell and Barry Richardson.

Family and friends were received on Thursday, May 2, at Blair Stubbs Funeral Home.

Lula’s life was a living example of one of her favorite scripture’s on Love:

“It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves. Love never fails” –1 Corinthians 13:7-8.

Our lives and hearts were molded by Lula’s unconditional love from the first breath we took on this earth, just as our lives forever changed the moment she took her last breath on this earth and entered the kingdom of heaven.
