Burdette Carl Horstman

Burdette Carl “Birdie” Horstman went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 8, 2019. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Wortham, with the Rev. Chris Rowe, officiating.

Burdette Carl Horstman was born on Jan. 7, 1942 at Concordia, Missouri to Dorothy and Carl Horstman, who later moved to Corder, Missouri. When Burdette was 12 years old, Carl’s sister’s children, Shirley, Ruthie and Gary Rogers came to live with them.

He married Doris Louise Wiley on August 25, 1963. They have three children, Mitchell Todd Horstman & wife Suyane of New Chaney, Texas, Michelle Joy McLelland and husband JR of Wortham, Texas and Maisie Paige Lea and husband Brett of Porter, Texas; granddaughters, Michelle’s daughters Darcy Taylor, student at Texas Tech and Braidee Taylor, 12; grandsons, Cody Talbott, Maisie’s son and JT Lea, Brett’s sons and JR’s boys, James and Coby McLelland.

He worked at several different jobs before he was hired by Amoco Oil, now BP, in 1976. When the refinery closed in Independence, Missouri, he was transferred to the refinery in Texas City, Texas in 1983. In 1990 he was medically retired due to chemical poisoning. In July of 1990, they moved back to Springfield, Missouri. After he had lots of medical problems, they decided to move closer to their children and moved to Wortham, Texas in 2015, where their daughter, Michelle and JR McLelland live.
