Sales tax receipt checks to Bi-stone cities still look good

Cities and towns in the Bistone area of Limestone and Freestone counties received checks that were mostly in the black, since they reflected February sales by businesses that report tax monthly – before May’s anticipated drop due to March’s coronavirus restrictions and June’s expected cratering of sales receipt returns due to what amounted to the near closure of the economy in April because of the near shelter-in-place orders of many counties, including Limestone and Freestone.

Jason Ellis puts a bag of food in a vehicle during a food giveaway in the parking lot of Mexia First Assembly church Thursday afternoon. Ellis said all 100 bags of food were given out in 40 minutes. He said cars began lining up an hour before the 5 p.m. giveaway and by 5 cars were lined up down North Ross Avenue past McBay Elementary. Ellis said food will be distributed as it is collected.
