Help sought for Wortham fire victims

A Wortham family lost almost all their belongings in a fire Saturday night, Oct. 22, on West San Saba. Upon arrival shortly after the call that came in at 11:28 p.m., the Wortham Volunteer Fire Department began combating the fire that had already spread to the house’s attic as well as to a nearby commercial structure. No injuries were reported. Mutual aide was requested from Streetman Fire, Teague Volunteer Fire Department, Kirvin Volunteer Fire Department, City of Mexia Fire and EMS, Wortham PD and Richland Fire.

Mexia PD arrests 2 for recent shooting

Mexia Police Department officers arrested two men Friday afternoon, Oct. 21, suspected of involvement in a shooting in the 300 block of West Fannin in Mexia, according to a press release issued by MPD. MPD was dispatched about 2:20 p.m. Friday in reference to gunshots. As of early Friday evening, law enforcement had not received any reports of injuries sustained by anyone involved in this incident. Officers arrested Skylar Wood, 18, of Mexia, and Jordan West, 18, of Mexia. They are charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity, both second-degree felonies. They are also charged with Evading Arrest-Detention, a Class A misdemeanor.
