City water crew hits gas line; all clear

Mexia News Staff Report
A city work crew hit a natural gas line while working on a water line Tuesday morning in a grassy field on the south side of the Milam overpass near the intersection of West Carthage and North Belknap.
“Some people in the area may be able to smell the natural-gas odor,” said Mexia City Manager Eric Garretty. “Atmos (Energy, gas company) is monitoring the air, but it’s a relatively small leak. There isn’t any danger.”
City workers and Atmos workers worked together to fix the leak that occurred about 10:30 a.m. when city workers struck the line.
Following safety precautions, the Atmos workers dug a hole a distance from the break and used a special clamp to stop the flow of gas.
