Young Blackcats made strides, gained experience

By Skip Leon

The Mexia baseball team had its ups and downs in Coach Evan Simpson's first year at the helm.
However, with a number of freshmen and sophomores getting vital playing experience, Simpson sees brighter days in the future.
The Blackcats qualified for the postseason with a fourth-place finish in District 18-4A. They were knocked out in the bi-district round by Robinson.
Mexia finished with a 2-6 district record. They were 7-15-1 overall and lost their final eight games. Still, their record was an improvement over the previous year.
The coach noted that only senior Zac Klosterman and sophomore Jaden Proctor were returning starters.
