Wortham baseball coach Chad Coker said his team got off to a slow start in their non-district campaign. They lost five of their first six games in tournament play.
However, by the time the Bulldogs hit District 16-2A action they were clicking on all cylinders.
Wortham has run through district without a loss and clinched the championship Tuesday with a 15-4 victory over Dawson. They are a perfect 9-0 in district play. They are 10-5 overall.
Riesel is in second place with a 7-2 district record. Both losses have been to Wortham. The district is comprised of five Class 2A schools and three Class 1A schools. Wortham and Riesel each have two games left against 2A teams. The best Riesel can do is tie Wortham, but the Bulldogs hold the tie breaker by virtue of their two victories over the runners-up.
Wortham has stormed to the district title with a strong 1-2 combination at the head of its pitching staff and a potent offense led by some of the team’s seniors.
