DECA students ‘get it done,’ head to convention

By Skip Leon
The 126 students in the Mexia High School chapter of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) are a dedicated bunch.
Members have sat in the rain in 40-degree weather to collect blankets for children’s hospitals in Dallas. The chapter officers have spent their lunch periods recruiting new members. They have gone trick-or-treating for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), collecting money instead of candy, with the funds going to help children in third-world countries.
The hard work has paid off and six Mexia students will attend the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta on April 20-24.
The six attendees will be Haleigh Ruiz, who is in her third year as the chapter’s president; David Sarabia, vice president of Finance; Rene Curry, vice president of Marketing; Marty Lopez, vice president of Hospitality; and chapter members Yadira Garcia-Ortiz and Yanet Ortiz.
In addition to Ruiz, Curry, Lopez and Sarabia, other DECA officers this year are Jenny Vu, vice president of Career Development; and Macie Martinez, vice president of Leadership.
