The Mexia Blackcats varsity baseball team won one game and lost three in the Buffalo Tournament over the weekend, beating Riesel 7-4 in the tournament opener, but falling 10-2 to Waco University 10-2, then 3-0 to Groesbeck and by the same score to Tyler Lee JV.
Starting off the tournament with the Riesel Indians, the Blackcats got two singles by Zac Klosterman and J.R. Deichler, coupled with a pair of walks by Travion Carter and Trevor Griffin to score four runs in the top of the first. Davion Carter (pinch-running for Marcos Gonzales) scored Mexia’s first run on a wild pitch, then Jacob Allen was singled in by Deichler. Venegas — who reached earlier on a fielder’s choice — and Travion Carter made it home on a Riesel error.
The Indians took advantage of two Blackcat errors to score twice in the bottom of the first to make it 4-2.
In the second, Mexia returned the favor as Allen scored on an Indian infield error to put the Blackcats up by three, 5-2.
Mexia added two more runs in the top of the third after Griffin made it in on Jaden Proctor’s fly ball single to right field, then Proctor — making it to third after a stolen base and a passed ball — scored the Blackcats’ seventh run after Riesel opted for the out at first.
