DeModesty Williams scored 14 and Yasmine Green sank nine to help lead the Mexia Ladycats to a 67-33 win over the visiting Athens Lady Hornets in Friday’s district-opener at Blackcat Gym.
Mexia (17-6, 1-0) hit the court pressing Athens on defense and took an 18-5 lead at the end of one. The Lady Hornets (12-5, 0-1) tried to match the Ladycats defensive pressure by doing the same, but gave up too many easy baskets to Mexia and eventually pulled back into a half-court man-to-man.
The second period turned into a shooting frenzy, with Mexia getting into some foul trouble as Athens outscored the crimson and black 18-16. Eight of those 18 came from the free throw line and two from the three-point arc, both made by the Lady Hornets Makiyah McCollister.
The Ladycats spread their scoring in the second period, with five players getting points.
Coming out of the half with a 34-23 lead, Mexia continued to put points on the board, led by Jenny Williams seven in the quarter to give the Ladycats a 50-28 advantage heading into the fourth period.
