Dutch-oven demo shows ease of campfire cooking

Personnel at the Confederate Reunion Grounds demonstrated, before the bitter cold weather set in, how to cook over a campfire with a Dutch oven.
Site Manager Amanda McVay made biscuits, sausage gravy and scrambled eggs before a group of about a dozen park visitors, some having driven from far distances.
Volunteer from the audience Amanda Burkeen, 12, helped McVay prepare the food.
McVay recommended not placing the biscuits too close together, to ensure they were fluffy.
“For biscuits, we don’t want a lot of fire on the bottom because we don’t want the bottoms to burn,” she said.
Once the biscuits were all in the pot, McVay covered the Dutch oven with a lipped lid and placed hot coals across the top to ensure the heat was more evenly applied.
