Blackcat strikers fare well in Madisonville tournament

Great start to the season for the Mexia Blackcats soccer team as they went 2-1 over the weekend, competing in the Madisonville Tournament.
The Crimson and Black opened play against Diboll, defeating the Lumberjacks 3-2. The two teams were tied at the half 2-2, but in the second half Mexia’s Kevin Garcia intercepted a pass and slipped the ball by the Lumberjack goalkeeper for the match winner. Lalo Ortiz and Angel Escamilla scored goals for Mexia in the first half. Garcia also had an assist for the Blackcats in the first half. Mexia had 17 shots on goal, while goalkeepers Gustavo Briceno and Colten McClosky teamed up for four saves.
The going was a little tough in the second match of the tournament as the Blackcats took on host Madisonville, falling to the Mustangs by the score of 3-1.
Mexia trailed at the half, 2-0. Madisonville added another goal in the second half. Isaac Mendez kept the Blackcats from being shutout with a second half goal, assisted by Danny Prado.
