The basketball journey has taken the No. 22-ranked Mexia Blackcats to destinations far and wide this season, but the trip finally ends -- at least for a short time -- as the Crimson and Black play their first home game since the 2016-17 season when they host the Corsicana Tigers.
This season the Blackcats have played 19 games on the road (it’ll be 20 by the time they play Tuesday), which includes two tournament wins, including this past weekend as they captured the championship trophy at the Buffalo Christmas Shootout Basketball Tournament.
Mexia opened the tournament with a forfeit win over Cleveland, then went on later in the day to slip past Splendora 50-47. On Friday, the Blackcats defeated Anderson-Shiro, 72-30, then Iola, 64-54, to move into the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Mexia finally got a chance to face Cleveland and ended up with the 10-point win, 70-60, moving them into the championship game against Christian Homeschool Sports Ministries (based out of Spring).
In the finals against the Crimson Knights, Mexia fell behind early and trailed 22-17 after the first period of play.
