Playing in the championship bracket of the Texas State 7-on-7 Championships, the Mexia Blackcats seemed to have the Pleasant Grove Hawks back on their heels, leading 32-26, in the first round of play on Friday.
But a couple of late penalties gave the Hawks a chance to score and complete the extra-point to give Pleasant Grove the 33-32 win, knocking the Blackcats out of the tournament Friday morning.
However, Mexia head football coach, Frank Sandoval - who watched his team play (like other coaches) from the end zone, was more impressed with the way the Blackcats stayed with one of the top teams Class 4A.
“The kids are playing hard, trusting what we’re doing,” said Sandoval. “Our kids played hard. If a team’s going to beat us, they’re going to have to out play us hard every single second.”
Mexia certainly showed in the early going this summer in league play and in the tournament, that other teams shouldn’t expect to take them lightly.
