Despite being outscored 16-0 to start the game, the tenacious defense of the Ladycats helped to cut the deficit to one, 38-37, with 1:37 left in the third - capped by the three-pointer of Britnea Jones. Jones repeated her effort with a buzzer-beater from 25 ft. out to again pull the Ladycats with one to end the third, 43-42.
"Our kids are starting to understand how we have to play - really aggressive both on offense and defense and that's what we're after", said Mexia Head Coach Randy Barger. "That's what got us in the game tonight after we started from behind. We caught up then we kind of went cold at the start of the fourth quarter and in the middle."
Mexia freshman starter Ashley Johnson knotted the game at 43 all to begin the final period on 1 for 2 free throws.
