A weekly column about anything and everything
going on in the wacky world of sports.

Today, we're going to talk Class 3A basketball.

When talking high school football playoffs, one can debate that Region III has the toughest path to the championship. The same could be said for the 3A basketball playoffs.

Dating back to 1999, the State Champion has emerged from the Region III bracket five times with Region II following with four in that time span. Four of the last five titles, however, have come from Region II including last year's Champions Dallas Madison. Sour Lake Hardin-Jefferson brought the crown home to Region III in 2007.

Mexia fans know that two of those five titles, 1999 and 2001, reside in the Blackcat trophy case. Another is displayed at current 19-3A rival La Vega's house (2000).

This year, Region III has the most teams ranked in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 with eight as of January 11th. They also have as many ranked in the Top 10 - five (no. 2 Cleveland [*19-2, no. 4 Hardin-Jefferson [23-2], no. 7 Lorena [19-5], no. 8 Silsbee [16-2] and no. 10 Bryan Rudder [14-5]) as Regions I and IV have in in the entire Top 25. Region II has seven state-ranked teams, but only two are in the top 10 (no. 1 Dallas Madison [15-5] and no. 6 Kennedale [17-4]).
